Because of the global COVID-19 pandemic, many industries have been forced to adapt, change, or shut down completely. Broadway is no different. In early 2020, all performances were canceled as a precaution, with hopes of reopening in a matter of weeks. There are still no performances on Broadway, but that’s changing in September. However, if you need a bit of Broadway-style entertainment before shows start, look no further.
“WICKED IN CONCERT: A Musical Celebration of the Iconic Broadway Score” is coming to Panhandle PBS. This special event will celebrate the beloved songs from one of Broadway’s most iconic musicals. Hosted by Kristin Chenowith and Idina Menzel, “WICKED IN CONCERT” features never-before-heard renditions of classic songs, arranged and performed by celebrity artists in film, television and pop music. Musical numbers featured include “The Wizard and I,” “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” “Wonderful,” “No Good Deed,” “For Good,” and “As Long As You’re Mine.”
“WICKED IN CONCERT” is directed by Broadway legend Baayork Lee, Associate Director Tara Young and Assistant Director Cassey Kivnick. Orchestra arrangements for the special were created by Luke Frazier and members of the American Pops Orchestra in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and New York City.
“Wicked” is a Broadway sensation that tells the story of the Land of Oz from a different perspective. It is the fifth longest running show in Broadway history and has won more than 100 international awards, including a Grammy Award and three Tony awards. It has been performed in 16 countries and translated into six different languages. Since its opening in 2003, “Wicked” has been presented to more than 60 million people and earned over $5 billion globally.
“WICKED IN CONCERT: A Musical Celebration of the Iconic Broadway Score” will premiere on Sunday, August 29 at 8 p.m. on Panhandle PBS.
