Max and Jake have a weakened sibling bond – and a dark secret. One night, during an inebriated drive home from a wedding, the brothers ran into an elderly pedestrian. Mark Bonnar (“Unforgotten”) and Jamie Sives (“To The Ends of the Earth”) star as Max and Jake as they attempt to cover up their crime in “Guilt” on MASTERPIECE.
Typically in a hit-and-run situation, the perpetrator flees the scene as quickly as possible. However, Max and Jake had another idea. They gather Walter, the victim, and take him back to his house. It’s there they discover that Walter had terminal cancer.
“He was dying slowly. We just made it quick,” said Max. “We just made it quick.”
As a powerful attorney with knowledge of the ins and outs of the law, Max takes charge of the cover-up. Jake, stoned and uninsured, was the driver of Max’s car that night, while Max himself sipped champagne from the passenger seat. In an attempt to recover incriminating evidence, the brothers find themselves at Walter’s wake. Here, they meet Angie, Walter’s niece and closest relative, who takes an immediate interest in Jake, making Max’s plans significantly more complicated.
- Episode One: Returning intoxicated from a wedding, Jake and Max run down an old man and decide to tell no one. Their cover-up quickly snowballs in complexity.
- Episode Two: Max tries to sabotage Kenny’s investigation, but the detective closes in on damaging evidence. Sheila adds a new wrinkle to the case. Claire gets suspicious.
- Episode Three: Spurred by Angie, Jake probes Max’s control of his finances. Jake also grows suspicious of Angie. Roy tightens the screws on Max by threatening Jake.
- Episode Four: With facts surrounding Walter’s death increasingly in question, Max risks all to come out on top. Jake and Angie also take a gamble. Claire cuts her losses.
