Filmed in front of a live audience at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL, “Great Performances – George Jones: Still Playin’ Possum” is an all-star celebration honoring one of the most influential, storied and beloved country music icons in history.
Throughout his lifetime, George Jones sold over 20 million albums, was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, a Kennedy Center Honoree, and a National Medal of the Arts recipient and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award recipient.
Jones achieved 79 top 10 hits and 10 number one hits including “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” which is widely regarded as one of the greatest country songs of all time. Some of the hits included in the special are “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair,” “The Race is On,” “Yesterday’s Wine,” and more. Performers include Travis Tritt, Tanya Tucker, Brad Paisley, Jelly Roll, Dierks Bentley, Sam Moore, Wynona, Jamey Johnson, Uncle Kracker, Trace Adkins, Lorrie Morgan, Joe Nichols and other country stars.
The tribute was recorded on April 25, 2023, marking the 10th anniversary of Jones’ passing. “Great Performances – George Jones: Still Playin’ Possum” will premiere at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 23 on Panhandle PBS.
