Have you ever daydreamed about one day completely uprooting the lives of your entire family and moving across the country to a brand new place, maybe a quaint seaside town or a cozy mountain village, and making a new life for yourself from scratch? Nothing but a clean slate, and a whole new world of opportunities.
Okay, maybe that seems a little bit extreme. However, it’s exactly what columnist George Turner did with his two teenage children in the Australian comedy-drama “800 Words.”
Turner works for a well-known newspaper in Sydney, Australia, producing a weekly column of exactly 800 words. After his wife dies, he finds himself looking for a fresh start. He buys a house online that he’s never seen in person in a small seaside town in New Zealand that he visited with his parents as a child. So, he uproots his children Shay and Arlo and begins a brand new journey, though things don’t turn out as picturesque as he hoped, leaving his family uncertain about their future.
“800 Words” premieres at 9 p.m., Saturday, June 20 on Panhandle PBS. Tune in and follow along with the Turner family as they navigate the struggles of life in a new place with all kinds of new obstacles.
