A worldwide after-school math and education center has expanded into Amarillo.

Kumon Math and Reading Center of Amarillo – Southwest has opened at The Markets on Soncy at 8801 Buccola Ave.

Office hours run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with class hours scheduled from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Mondays and Thursdays, according to the center’s website, www.kumon.com/amarillo.

Kumon has 136 centers in Texas, with more than 24,000 class enrollments, a news release said. The first Texas center opened in 1989.

The company says it empowers children to become self-learners, sparks critical thinking and builds confidence.

The Amarillo franchise website says Vibha Patel, the owner, is a certified instructor who used the Kumon Method as a student and worked as an assistant at Kumon centers in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex centers while in college. She graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a degree in neuroscience and business administration.
