Call the Midwife leaps into a new decade when it returns for its fifth season 7 p.m. Sunday.
The popular British show, about a group of nurse midwives and nuns who work with desperately poor people in the Poplar district in London’s East End, jumped ahead to 1961 at the end of its fourth season. The new decade promises a wave of social changes and scientific advances.
Sunday’s premiere finds the women struggling to understand why two babies were born with severe deformities, and the season also will find them dealing with an outbreak of typhoid, an increase in lung cancer, a teenage pregnancy and a vanishing mother.
