Phlip Coggins will perform Friday and Sunday in Amarillo.

By Chip Chandler — Digital Content Producer

Fans of rock, country, soul and almost any other kind of music will find plenty of choices around Amarillo this weekend and beyond. Here's our guide to where to go.

Plenty of bands will be performing for Halloween parties; click here for a full roundup of holiday festivities.

Phlip Coggins

Lubbock-born singer Phlip Coggins is looking to some old-school influences for his new EP, Dying Day.

The singer, who now calls Austin home, will celebrate the two-song EP's release with a 10 p.m. Friday show at Golden Light Cantina, 2908 S.W. Sixth Ave.; cover is $6. (He'll also perform at 6 p.m. Sunday at Cowboy Gelato Smokehouse, 6103 S. Coulter St., Suite 200, for a Steak Out dinner; reservations are $35.)

Both "Warmth," a Christmas-inspired tune that was the second song Coggins ever wrote, and the title track show the influence of one of Coggins' favorite guitarists, John Mayer.

"I fell hook, line and sinker for him because it was the first time in several, several years that a songwriter and artist came into the mainstream," Coggins said.

He recorded "Warmth" about two years ago, then "Dying Day" about a year ago after producing an album for Derek Bohl.

"As I was working with him and producing him, this pop sensibility kind of soaked in and took me back to when I was younger and learning to play," Coggins said. "One night I was at the studio in Lubbock, supposed to be doing work and not in the mood to do work, so I grabbed my boss's guitar and was fiddling around, and this song came out in about an hour."

They're both quite different from Coggins' last release, Welcome to the Freak Show, which boasted a furious sound.

"They're completely at the opposite ends of the spectrum," Coggins said. "Where we go from here is God knows where, but it's nice to flip the table and not be all about darkness and raging on the stage."
