Chalk It Up sidewalk art contest returns this summer

Chalk It Up, the award-winning sidewalk art contest from Amarillo College and Panhandle PBS, is returning in July after being cancelled last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Registration is free and open until July 20. However, due to the nature of the competition and the limited space, only the first 40 entries will be accepted. Artists may register as individuals or teams of up to four. Participants will be assigned an eight-foot square that will serve as their canvas, and they will have from 8 a.m. to noon to create their masterpieces.

Spectators are welcome to attend the competition as well. In addition to watching the artists and voting on their favorite pieces, attendees can create their own artwork with their kids in the ‘amateur’s area,’ contribute to a group color-by-number piece, and visit some local food trucks that will be present.

At noon, a panel of judges representing the local arts community will assess the artwork and announce the winners. First, second and third places as well as the Fan Favorite will receive a prize. In 2019, a total of $900 was awarded to the winners.

This summer, Chalk It Up will take place on Saturday, July 31 from 8 a.m. to noon on the Oeschger Family Mall, located between the Ware Student Commons and the College Union Building on the Washington Street Campus of Amarillo College. For more information or to register for this event, click HERE!
