An Amarillo High School teacher has been chosen for a statewide University Interscholastic League honor.

Mellessa Denny – who has taught speech and debate for 20 years and has sponsored students through the years who have moved on to regional and state competitions – recently was honored with the UIL’s Sponsor Excellence Award.

The award recognizes teachers who help develop students in extracurricular activities, according to the organization.

“Mellessa is an excellent teacher who not only challenges her students to do their best, but builds relationships with them so that the students feel encouraged and empowered,” Amarillo High School Principal David Vincent said in a statement.

Denny is one of 16 award recipients across Texas. UIL is the organization that governs extracurricular activities and competitions between schools in Texas.
