Drew Fish Band will play Saturday at Golden Light Cantina.

By Chip Chandler — Digital Content Producer

From rock to country, "blues-grass" to Tejano, these are the tunes that will liven up your nights for Labor Day weekend and beyond.

The Drew Fish Band

Austin-based singer Drew Fish grew up around music — so much so, in fact, that the guy next door even told him he should maybe do it for a living.

"To me, it was a neighbor telling me to get a band together," Fish said. "I didn't really know who he was."

He shoulda listened. The neighbor, it turns out, was Lloyd Maines, the Lubbock native and Texas music icon (and father of Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, to boot.)

No harm done, though: Maines eventually hooked Fish up with Grammy-winning producer Adam Odor to produce the band's two albums, including its most recent, Treat You Right. The Drew Fish Band will celebrate its release with a 10 p.m. Saturday show at Golden Light Cantina, 2908 S.W. Sixth Ave.; cover is $7.

Around the same time as Fish's unheeded advice from Maines, he got another push into music.

"When I was in high school, Cory Morrow was having a show in Tyler. He was a family friend of ours ... so I was there, and he pulled me up on stage," Fish said. "I played 'Drink One More Round' ... (and) looking at it now, I was terrible. ... I rushed the song so much.

"But at the time, I came off stage and said, 'That was so much fun, so cool, I need to get a band together'," Fish recalled. "That was kind of the turning point."
