In the spotlight
They Say the Wind Made Them Crazy
Words often just aren't enough for Sarah Ruth Alexander, vocalist for the experimental duo They Say the Wind Made Them Crazy, which will play its first Amarillo show on Saturday at The 806, 2812 S.W. Sixth Ave.
"I find that words — I use words some, but I find that words can be really confining," said Alexander, a Childress native. "I like people to be able to find their own meaning in things. And sometimes, I feel like there aren't enough words to communicate certain emotional states."
TSTWMTC, which released the double album Far from the Silvery Light in July, focuses more on feelings than literal explication.
"We're in territories that have no labels," Alexander said. "It's hard to put what we do in a box. We both are into extended technique ... (or) playing an instrument outside of the classical training.
"We're just wanting to explore making new sounds, bringing whatever is inside of yourself (out) however it wants to come out," she continued. "We're not really wanting to sound like something (in particular); we're just adding to a vocabulary that already exists."
The band uses a variety of instruments and Alexander's vocalizations in fairly improvised performances, she said.
"Sometimes, I feel like there's more to express and I'm trying to get it all out," she said. "I hit it sometimes. I hit the place that's a new territory, and it flows."
The show is free, but donations are accepted. Call 806-322-1806.
TJ Broscoff
Texas country singer TJ Broscoff will return to Amarillo for a CD release party celebrating Love, Loss & The Afterglow at 10 p.m. Friday at Hoots Pub, 2424 Hobbs Road.
"It's kind of a concept record," Broscoff said. "I'm dealing with personal issues, as we all do. ... The ending of one relationship, the beginning of a new relationship, just that whole process through a two-year period.
"The record starts off a little darker with some heartbreak ... but by the end of the record, it's sending a positive message, that there is an afterglow. ... That can be love, it can be with addiction, it can be with the loss of a family member. I'm getting everything tied down that I'd been going through for the last couple of years," he said.
Broscoff has been open about his past struggles with drug addiction and said he expects that those battles will continue to color his music.
"It's such a big part of my life that I don't know how it wouldn't," he said.
Plus, Broscoff said he finds it difficult to not write songs that touch on his personal experiences.
"I don't know how some of the guys in other parts of the country world write songs that don't mean anything, but to each their own," he said.
Cover is $7.
