Hot air balloons are expected to glow Saturday in Palo Duro Canyon.

This is one Christmas celebration that's full of hot air.

Several balloons from Amarillo's Black Sheep Squadron will inflate for a Christmas in the Canyon balloon glow at dusk Saturday on the south end of the parking lot at Mack Dick Pavilion in the canyon. (Weather permitting, of course.)

"We like to participate because it is a fun, family-oriented event that also helps provide canned goods for the High Plains Food Bank," said the squadron's James Morgan. "We love to get out and show off our balloons when we can, and this is a fun and beautiful setting that allows us to show off the beauty of the canyon along with our balloons."

Inside, hot chocolate will be served, Santa Claus will be on hand for photos, and live music will be provided by the Oakdale Elementary School honor choir. Children can make a Palo Duro mouse ornament, as well.

Admission is free with a donation of a nonperishable food item for High Plains Food Bank after 4 p.m.; regular park entry fees ($5 for ages 13 and older) will apply before 4 p.m.

Most-needed items for the food bank warehouse include canned tuna, canned chicken, canned veggies, canned soups, peanut butter, rice, beans and pasta/boxed dinners.
