For a second year, the High Plains Food Bank will kick off its Kids Cafe summer meals program with a big party.

The Summer Meals Kick Off Party is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Gilliland Community Kitchen, 2199 SE 8th Ave.

Kids are encouraged to wear superhero costumes to the free event. There will be food, drinks, music, games and family contests, a moonwalk and other activities.

The food bank's Kids Cafe, which is part of the national hunger relief program Feeding America, program and first opened in 2003. Staff and volunteers serve upwards of 2,000 meals per day during non-school hours and throughout the summer, and teach children about food safety, nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
