American Graduate Day 2017: Texas Panhandle champions

Panhandle PBS, along with stations across the country, will celebrate American Graduate Day 2017 this Saturday, Oct. 14.

The national program, which begins at 1 p.m. that day, explores the value and effectiveness of mentorship as a tool for boosting educational achievement.

Panhandle PBS has participated in this year's program by highlighting the work of local American Graduate Champions who help guide students toward academic success.

This year's local champions are:

• Calee Follins, Amarillo College's new student programs coordinator, who matches students with mentors to help their college experiences:

• Cassie Davenport, a counselor with the Amarillo Independent School District who goes above and beyond to help students to succeed inside and outside the classroom:

• Doug Curry, a longtime educator who has launched "Set for Success," a program that makes high school diplomas accessible to everyone no matter their age or circumstances:
